Windows Firewall

By boomio ·
I've got a small problem with windows firewall on my computer. It keeps turning itself off!!
I've got norton antivirus installed on my computer. I enabled personal firewall on it but I found it was blocking alot of programs from accessing the internet and it had too many pop up messages(i tried to configure it but gave up after a couple of days). I am just wondering does anyone know if norton is the problem or is it a problem solely with windows firewall!!

A lot of programs like...? You should scan your system for adware and spyware - Adaware and Spybot Search & Destroy are your friends.

If your Windows firewall is on, you will need to unblock the "usual suspects", when you use the for the first time.

Hi

I think I know what you are saying - you have Norton Personal Firewall installed? NPF will, by default, turn off Windows firewall, simply because it is much more powerful.

The problem you are referring to lies in the configuration of NPF. There are 2 check boxes which trigger these pop-ups - one is automatic program control and the other is designed to notify you if a program calls on another to access the Internet. Make sure that both these boxes are unchecked and all will be fine.

I, too, experienced this when I used to use NPF, and it drove me nuts until I figured it out.

Good luck

not sure how Norton Firewall works, but usually i always turn off the Windows firewall because it slows down my bandwidth a bit. and separately i run ZoneAlarm firewall and it works perfectly, in Zone Alarm configuration you can hide the popup except program control issues, however if any program that requires internet access, for e.g : PowerDVD trying to access internet.. then you should block it. because it is just a way to transmit unnecessary information for end-user. only any programs that need internet access like antivirus, firewall, mirc, msn, spyware checker or anything that need updates then you should allow it.

On the first answer, I have run adware and spyware and anti virus scans in safe mode and nothing came up.
The second answer is the one I am looking for but is there a way to disable NPF and enable Windows firewall as default. What is happening at the moment is that I have NPF turned off and norton automatically turns off Windows Firewall => NO FIREWALL.

Before it turns off what steps are being done? It may be it is 'sposed to turn off for some reason!

In other words WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

Korgmeister: the steps being done before are,
1. I log on
2. Check windows firewall status, its off
3. Turn it on, click apply, OK or whatever.
4. Next time I log on, repeat from step 2.
Does that explain it enough for you??
