Windows Generates an Explore.exe error

By khunter ·
I have had three incidents in the past month where Windows will boot up with an Explore.exe error nad says to Reload Windows. The only common symptom seems to be after accessing Compuserve or AOL using Dial-up networking but I am not sure if this iscausing the error. Has anyone experienced this and if so is there a fix besides reloading windows or reformatting the drive?

Windows Generates an Explore.exe error

KHunter,
First, get the Dial Up Networking update from Microsofts web site. I believe it is version 1.3 or 1.3.1, something like that. If you can't find it there, check www.winfiles.com, that is if you can get to the internet. If not, then try this:
There is a hidden backup copy of your registry in the Windows directory. If you are getting a "registry" error of any kind, I would restore the hidden copy. Basically, you rename you system.dat and user.dat to *.old, then rename the backups, system.da0 and user.da0 to *.dat. At DOS prompt, type "attrib system.dat -r -a -h -s" & press ENTER, then do the same for user.dat. Now, repeat this for system.da0 and user.da0 (your backup copies) Rename (system) & (user).dat to (system) & (user).old, then rename (system) & (user).da0 to *.dat. Now, type "attrib system.dat +r +a +h +s" ENTER and the same for user.dat and reboot. If this doesn't work, I would un-install (from safe mode, if necessary) the last piece of hardware or software that was added, assuming some was added, that may have caused this problem in the first place. If that doesn't do it, then (having "been there, done that") you will have to reinstall Windows.
Hope this helps,

Windows Generates an Explore.exe error

I have found out that the only way to get rid of the error with explorer.exe was to reformat the hard drive and reload Windows. I already knew about renaming the system and user files but that did not work.

Thanks for the response.

I agree about installing the latest DUN, but also make sure you have the latest virus signatures and run a full scan on your system. There are viruses out there (W95 Hybris.gen, for example) that will corrupt your DUN and cause errors like the onesyou describe.
