Windows has detected a hard disk problem but BIOS checks are clear.

I’ve a brand new HP laptop, WDC WD1600BEVT-60ZCT0 ATA hard drive, Pentium Dual T3200 2GHz.

When I first got the laptop for the first few hours it was running fine, then after installing it’s first lot of Vista updates it started generating Windows errors stating there is a hard disk problem and to back up all data.

So…I restored it back to it’s factory state and the errors stopped. Then the updates installed again and the error cam back.

I ran the primary disk check in BIOS, the quick test and the full test both came back fine but the SMART test detected errors.

Any ideas? Could this be due to the updates or has my brand new shiny laptop really got a dodgy disk? Thanks.
