Windows Installer

By Engr ·
Windows installer service is corrupted somehow. i can not start office applications or any other aplication. Also i cant start any installation setup file. I have downloaded the Installer from Microsoft site. but i cant install it because the service already exist. When opening the services under Administrative Options, i couldnt find an oaction for deleting an existing service. ( there is only Start, Stop, Restart , rename and Pause)

So any body knows how to delete a service in 2000 Profissional ??? I am administrator on the machine by the way.
Shall i edit the registry to delete the server .. if yes then how ?

your help is very much appreciated

Hi,

here's a tool that will unregister a service.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/reskit/tools/existing/delsrv-o.asp

Also, here's a guide on how to reinstall the service.

remove any spaces in the URL.

good luck,

Ronen ,

This is a great tool but it needs installation. I can not run any installtion file because the Windows Installer service is corrupted. Probably the only solution is to delete the service from the registry directly. do you know where can i find the classes or values related to the services in the regedit file

Hi,
Perhaps a better approach will be to troubleshoot exactly whats happened to the service. What error messages are you getting when you try ti install, either interactively or in the event viewer?....

I would try to install service pack 3. It updates the service, or install the latest version of the windows installer, but i cant seem to find it on microsoft's site.

What i would suggest it run recovery using the Win 2000 CDRom. Don't worry about the programs, the recovery only delete Winnt folder and reinstall it (if you do it correctly : ) ).
