whenever a user logs in(os-win 2k pro) and opens ms excel/ms word/power point a pop up window of windows installer opens.the installer asks for data1.msi package.since the users do not have installation rights they cannot browse and specify the path.
kindly let me know how to prevent this.

windows installer

Hi,

It looks like its the way office was originally installed - from an administrative installation point.

When a component of office needs updating due to office's "self healing" or some uninstalled component, it asks for data1.msi (if the component is on CD1)

See the following link for a description of this...

If the users dont have installer rights, then you're going to have to do it for them... Either they install or they dont... Thats the decision your business makes and will invariably involve extra work for support staff to do the installations.

But maybe not as much work as fixing THEIR botched and dodgy installations!!??!!

Cheers,
Tim.

It is probably caused by the way the original installation was done. Perhaps some components that should have been installed with the "Run on my computer" option were installed with the "Install on first use" option instead. Since your user's don't have installation rights, you'd have to go to their workstations and do it for them logged on as a local administrator. The other option would be to review your Office installation setup and change things so that everything they need to have is pre-installed on their local computer. Hope this helps!
