Windows Installer not working!

By jmoore ·
OK, I removed the Nimda virus from my Win 2000 Server and now Windows Installer will not work. I done all the suggested procedures; renamed the msiexec.exe file and related dll files and reinstalled using the latest version. No good! I get no help other than a Windows generic 1015 error suggesting possible registry problems. I've reinstalled the OS, after formatting the partition, I've used Nortons to scout for obvious errors, I've tried other versions of the Windows Installer. Help!!!!

Windows Installer not working!

have you tried unregistering and then registering the installer?

Go to a command prompt.
Type msiexec /unregister
Type msiexec /regserver

Go back to the desktop and try your installation.

Given the fact that some viruses can be very invasive, perhaps you have damage through out the drive. It may be necessary to do a high and low level format to the entire thing. Otherwise it may be necessary to replace the server, I'm sorry to suggest. I know the cost hurts.

Windows Installer not working!

Hi Jim. Here's what someone else did to fix the problem:

I tracked down the Installer program ("msiexec.exe") by examining the file association properties for ".msi" files. No big deal. I spotted a number of .dll's that started with "msi*" and checked the properties on those to find out what they were for and found the ones that are relevant to MSI.

1) The registry entry for "msi.dll" was pointing to the wrong file. Somehow it got re-referenced to one that was located in my "Local Settings\Temp" folder which of course wasn't there anymore. So I ran "regsvr32 msi.dll" at the command line to fix that.

2) "msihnd.dll" had no entry at all. I don't know if it was required but I regsvr32'd that one, too.

3) "msiexec.exe" had an entry in the registry pointing to one of my temp folders so I fixed that by running "msiexec.exe /regserver" (to register the ActiveX EXE server).

After that everything seems to work fine.

Enjoy.
