Windows Internet Explorer (not responding)

I work from home, all of a sudden everything freezes, Internet Explorer (not responding). I get this 10 times a day, often have to reboot, Windows updates seem to make matters worse by the day, Non-techie here…. oh, Vista if that matters… any suggestions?
