To cut a long story short, is there a way to bypass or reset the windows logon?

That depends on the version of Windows, and what if any networking components are installed.

You can "re-set" the log-in by deleting the .PWL files for the user(s).

For Windows 98 and Me(?) you can install tweakui, and set the system to automatically log on.

The other method in case of Windows9x/Me, you can check your network property from Control Panel, that change to "Windows Login". Without reboot, from Password in Control Panel, Change "Windows Password" to blank. Let all user use same Profile, then close and reboot your Windows. This should work.

If you wanna short cut domain log-in, the other method will be apply. In that case, it will endanger security concern.
