Windows ME and config.sys

By tehjason ·
Why can't I modify the config.sys? Each time I reboot, the config.sys file resets to its original blank form.

Check the attributes of the file to make sure that it is not set to "Read Only" That aside, Windows ME does not need a config.sys file to run. Why are you trying to alter it?

I am not really good with WinME, but I think that you are running into a conflict with Windows File Protection. This feature is enacted on boot. If "protected" files are changed, Windows will replace the changed files with archived copies to ensure system integrity.
I think that that is what is happening to you. You change config.sys, then reboot, and WFP replaces your changed file with an archived one.
Here is a TechNet article that talks about extracting a protected file, and setting it to be the one to be used, and not over-written by WFP.

Hope this helps.
