Windows ME and Dial-up Networking

By jeremy ·
I have a home user with a Windows ME based PC that keeps on dialing up the ISP when he tries to shut it down. The only way to continue is to select End Task - not a very elegant end to the day! I cannot see anywhere where this is configured. How do I stop it trying to dial up when shutting dowmn?

Windows ME and Dial-up Networking

This can be caused by a couple of things. The first is a Rojan virus that has a dialer program and is trying to contact the service it relates to, most of these dial up services that charge two arms and a leg per minute.

The second is in the modem or dial up settings, there is a check box option that you can set to have it maintain the connection adn re-dial when the connection is closed. Locate at decheck this box. I cant tell you where this is as I use ADSL via a router and don't remember exactly where this box is on a dial up service.

First Check the basics..

..Open Internet Explorer.
Select Tools--->> Internet Options..

then the Connections tab..

it will list all the connections available ..
with three options.

1- Never dial a connection
2- Dial whenever a network connection is not present
3- Always dial my default connection

I think your thrid option is on..

Just check the first option..

and you will go you dial when you want to not...whenever....IE think you need a connection..

hope it helps..
