Windows ME Error Messages

By Geoff59 ·
My computer has a 40G HDD partitioned into 4 drives. It will not boot up. Using On Track Disk Fixer I found all the drives are still there. When I boot up the computer and decide on SAFE MODE boot the following messages appear:
The following file is missing or corrupt: C:\WINDOWS\NLSFUNC.SYS
Ditto C:\WINDOWS\DISPLAY.SYS
Ditto C:\WINDOWS\IFSHLP.SYS
Then a blue screen appears with the message The Microsoft Installable File Manager System cannot find the helper file. Please ensure that IFSHLP.SYS has been installed. System Halted.
If I choose the NORMAL option then I get the same message of the 3 missing or corrupted files, then the message : Cannot set the code page(s) in DISPLAY.SYS. I have tried extracting the 3 files from the Windows ME CD ROM, I have tried the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article Q258471 but when I restart Windows ME in SAFE MODE and NORMAL mode the same error messages come up. I have also re-installed Windows ME but no change.

It looks like you'll need to reinstall but make sure you format this time. That will wipe everything out, hence eliminating any corrupt files.

If you're still geting the same problem after a clean install, then it might be your Win ME cd or the cd drive itself.

good luck,

You can also install Win ME clean on one of the other hard drives to see if the problem happens again. If it doesn't, run scandisk on the problem drive to see if you have any bad clusters.

I tried the 40G HDD as a slave drive in my other computer and it wouldn't recognise it so I reloaded Windows ME on the smaller second HDD in the computer with the 40G HDD. The computer ran okay until I attached the 40G HDD as the slave drive and thecomputer wouldn't boot up Windows ME and I got the same error messages again.
