Windows me freezes during boot

By kjackson_swc ·
When I turn on my computer the operating system(windows ME) freezes. The mouse does not work nor do the keyboard. Also when I try to turn off the computer the off/on button does not work. HELP?

What screen does it get to before it freezes??

Does the Memory check work ok?

Check that everthing is seated properly, ie the RAM, the CPU fan is spinning, the hard drive is plugged in properly.

Power off - unplug all connections including mouse and keyboard and re-plug in.

Is it a new one or have you replaced something recently - was it working ok then suddenly did this - did it start to go slow first??

Do you have a startup floppy you can try? or another hard drive?

Like the Samurai said, need to know how far Windows gets when loading.

Will it boot into safe mode without problems?

Do you press on/off switch for at least 5 seconds when trying to power off? Most ATX systems have at least a 5 second delay before they power off when button is depressed.
