Windows ME locks up during boot

    Locked

    by doc_computer ·

My new system AMD Athlon 1 Gig, K7VAT mother board with VIA KT-133 chipset, TNT2 AGP video, 256 megs RAM, 12X DVD, 30 Gig HD occasionally locks up right after the ME splash screen (just before entering the desktop screen) I get a blue screen with what looks like a green bar code across the top. After giving it the three finger reboot it will work fine for several days. Seems like a video driver problem to me but have already tried updating it. This is the update version of ME. Have tried reinstalling ME, nothing in the start up group, have checked win.ini and sys.ini, bootlog.txt, autoexec.bat etc.

sounds like a anti virus problem that could be accessing at bootup, try running the OS without the antivirus program which could be the problem ,since it only happens every few days.

If you believe its hardware, disable it in device manager, then try booting for serveral days. If you think it’s video card, try a different card in the system. Mkae sure EVEYRTHING except scanregistry, systray, statemgr, and pchealth are unchecked.Try booting to safe mode for a few days.. See if you are getting lock-ups then. If you are, then its something conflicting in windows. When you reinstalled ME, did you format first? If not, try that because dirty installs are no good most of the time. Make sure that the lines run= and load= are taken out of they win.ini windows directory in msconfig. Hope this helps.

Couple things you might want to try to troubleshoot this problem.

      1. After this happens check your bootlog for a failed load. This will tell you what your problem device or driver is.

      2. You could have a compatibility problem if you have anasus MB running in windowsME and large HD. It may be fixable with a fresh install of everything – in the right order. Start with ME, then ASUS (via 4/1, manual install of UltraPromise IDE driver), then TNT,then sound card then other peripherials and software. If you do it in the wrong order, some drivers will be installed that will not properly run the hardware and do not show up as having a problem.

      3. Is the video card well seated and the power supply tight? Sometimes a pin could be just a hair off and cause intermittent problems.

      Hope this helps. Charlie 🙂

#1 As I had said before I have looked at my bootlog.txt and found nothing failed.

#2 It’s not an ASUS MB, but I have tried a fresh load in the correct order and it didn’t help

        #3 Been there, tried that

      Good morning!
I am having the same problem here, with a few variations. I originally thought that it was a video card problem also. However, what I found was that the ssdpsrv.exe was briefly loading at startup, so I looked it up in the registry, exported the key to a file, and deleted the reference. Now, I boot up fine.

Through the manfactures tech support (ha ha)I finally figured out what the problem was.

I deleted the following two files and it has been working fine for some time now.

        DRVWPPQT.VXD & DRVWQ117.VXD

      Possible cause:

Did you get a newer “multi-media keyboard” ? Maybe the drivers for it aren’t all installed.

During boot-up the system tries to check if
everything (incl Keyboard) are there (and if
some drivers are loaded). Try a std keyboard
and see if this works right…if it does, then the new keyboard and/or driver(s) aren’t installed correctly.

Also, and you may have tried this but use your startup disk and boot with cd-support, after it loads the DOS drivers run setup off your original windows CD, or do a program only recover if you have a recovery disk and no actuall Windows CD, This will of course resetup the operating system and should replace any corrupted files there might have been, otherwise i suggest runningscandisk from the prompt after using the startup disk and running a thorough drive scan to make sure there is no physical damage.

      Regards,

      Maxwell

      Warning!
Corrupt/Bad VXDs don’t usually cause intermittent problems.
That is usually a marginal connection.
If this problem is solved, how about closing it?
      Regards, Chris
