Windows ME reinstall - no solution......

By AnswerMan ·
Hi All.....

Here is a good one. I have a box running Windows ME. I had been getting a couple DLL errors on boot, but reinstall of the "Dell Restore Disk" took those away.

Still two problems:

First, AFTER boot, I get a critical warning box(VBOkayOnly)that says "Registry Error" in the title bar.

The message says: "Cannot import sys.reg: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error."

I searched the registry for it, and it occurs once in:

HKEY/LOCAL MACHINE/ SOFTWARE/ MICROSOFT/ WINDOWS/ CURRENT VERSION/ RUN:

NAME: "sys" DATA: "Regedit /S sys.reg"

And I don't know if these problems are related, but I only have two choices on the "right click/ properties/ settings" from desktop. In the "color" drop down, there is ONLY

"2 colors" and "16 colors"....

There are no errors in device manager. The video card looks to be in good shape. I have run scandisk, defrag, SFC, reseated all components, ran every fix tool for every virus out there...

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance for your help.

You might want to scan your system for viruses. As for the colors, reinstall video card's driver. Remember to always reinstall your video card driver whenever you reinstall your OS.

I agree with the previous answer, but the recovery disk should have a good driver already, it sounds like the HDD has some problems. When you ran scandisk, did it reboot to run, and did it FIX any problems? If it fixed problems, then maybe that is why your video driver needs reinstalled and your reg error is occuring.
That reg. path is just for startup apps, you should be able to remove that entry to remove your startup error.

you need to flatten your system. run a Debug (which will delete all info from HDD & memory)
if its a Dell system "http://support.dell.com/us/en/kb/document.asp?dn=1011054#debug" this link will advise. Then re-partition (Fdisk) ,format & reinstall Me. You'll have no more problems. if you do mail me direct.
