Windows Me sees a second HD as CD-ROM

By abadillo ·
I am ensambling a new machine (which I plan to make a dual machine) with a GA-7VAXP motherboard. In IDE1 I have a HD loaded with Windows ME as master, which works good, and a second HD (40 Gig) as slave in which I plan to load Windows XP. In IDE2 I have a cd burner as master and a cd-rom as slave (both work good). The problem is that Windows ME sees the slave HD as cd-rom. I can not format it, let alone load it. I have tried the second hd in a different machine and it can not be read but the BIOS detects it as HD. Am I following the right approach? Thanks for your help!

I see 2 possibilities here:
1) the cdrom drive is the d: drive and you can change the mapping for that in the device manager to allow the second hard disk to be drive d: just set the cdrom to e:
or
2) the root directory of the d: has a file in itassociated with autorun cdroms, erase it. This means you or someone helping you copied acdrom to the d: drive at some point to create this situation.
Or actually 3) the hard disk is not registering and the cdrom is the next device.
Good Luck!

Sounds as though the BIOS is not recognizing the Hard drive
Boot the system at the startup page press the designated key to enter setup (look in bottom left-corner for key)
Once in CMOS configuration check to see if the drive is detected or set toauto to see the drive detection, you can do this in the right side pane by selecting auto detect
This may also require that you update the BIOS to recognize the large hard drive

Thanks to both of you for your advice but I have fixed the problem. What I did was to plug in IDE1 hd1 as master and cd-burner as slave and in IDE2 hd2 as master and cd-rom as slave. I had to connect the slaves at the end of the cable, I am not sureif that did a difference but that was what the cd-burner manufacturer instructed. Now I can see both HDs and both cd-roms, the bad new is that Windowx XP does not support dual booth with windows ME. Read www.microsoft.com/windows/multiboot.asp. I hope this info helps somebody. Thanks!
