windows me shows duplicate drives?

I have a fairly new Dell laptop with windows ME installed. I have a cable modem and recently left it on over night connected to the internet. I run norton firewall and antivirus protection. After leaving it on overnight, the system shut down unexpectedly. After this it had a hard time starting up. I finally got it to make it through checkdisk and start up. Now however it sees 2 drives (c,d) instead of just c. The two drives are identical in size (9GB – the total size of my hard drive) and identical in content. Also everytime I boot up now it goes into check disk. Is there anyway out of this ugly cycle? Thanks for the help!
