Windows ME TWEAKED!!........badly

By Techxan ·
I have an old gateway running Windows ME that I have messed up. After being busted for a "Drew Barrymore flashes David Letterman" video vid the documents menu, I decided to install TWEAK UI and eliminate the pesky thing.

I installed and ran Tweak UI, making the necessary tweaks, and a few other that seemed interesting at the time. You don't learn anything without throwing a few switches, as it were. Well, I managed to throw the switch to the control panel into the "dissappear from earth" position.

Control panel has dissappeared entirely from the Settings menu, my ability to search for anything is disabeled, using START>RUN>"control" or clicking on files wity ther .cpl extension in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory displays the following message:
"The opperation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system adnministrator"

I really would like to have this particular restriction removed, but TWEAK UI is in the aforementioned errant control panel, and does not respond to a doubleclick in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder.

I am comfortable editing the registry, But I just do not know where to edit at.

An extra 250 points if you will avoid preaching about backing up the registry before screwing with it also applies....but go ahead if you wish.....

Few things I've found:

Have you tried Safe Mode ?

Hold CTRL or repeatedly tap F8 as you boot and select
Safe Mode from menu..........

Use regedit to replace the following by reversing the poceedure:

Start Menu remove icons
Open regedit to:
HKEY CURRENT USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Policies\Explorer

Right-click the right pane and select New, Binary Value:

To remove Documents, name the binary value: NoRecentDocsMenu
To disable the Documents compilation process, name the binary value:
NoRecentDocsHistory
To remove Favorites, name the binary value: NoFavoritesMenu
To remove Find, name the binary value: NoFind
To remove Log Off, name the binary value: NoLogOff
To remove Run, name the binary value: NoRun
To disable Shut Down, name the binary value: NoClose
To disable Control Panel and Printer folders, name the binary value:
NoSetFolders
To disable Taskbar context menu, name the binary value:
NoTrayContextMenu

Double-click the new entry, select modify and add this value: 01 00 00
00
To reverse the action, change the value to: 00 00 00 00

Another fix is to place the HD in another PC as a slave, the TWEAKUI settings will be disabled as the registry is still intact on the new machine. This will allow you to view and edit/remove TweakUI from the HD on the slave.

There I didn't even say the bad thing! Who actually does that anyway, I know we are supoped to but the most I do is run Config Safe before an install so I can reverse it if needed, same idea but I didn't say it.

Open My computer and goto;

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\RESTORE\RSTRUI.EXE

Restore from a point before Tweak UI was used.
