Windows ME update

By marks ·
I have been downloading and installing updates from the Windows Update website successfully for a while now. But yesterday, after successfully updating the security patches, I attempted to download and install the update for Internet Explorer 6. Once I selected to download, it downloaded and started installing as usual. Then during the installation, it stalled after installing approx 70%. I let it sit there for about an hour in hopes of it continuing. I decided to cancel the install, when it replied that it will take a few minutes. That stalled too. With nothing else to try, I rebooted the machine. Upon, completing bootup, a windows pops up stating an incomplete update. It gives a choice to continue installation or start new update. Both of these choices have stalled on me through numerous attempts. Now Tools-Windows Update cannot find the website and I can't even remove IE 6.
Is there anything else I can try?
Thank you in advance.

Hi,
Did you check to see if IE6 is supported on Win ME? Please read whatever MSN has out there - I believe IE6 cannot be used with Win95 as well...

You can restore to a previous configuration before the updates that was working before this happened
Click Start--Programs-Accessories-System Tools, select System Restore and then choose to restore the system to a date before the downloads, note whatdate it was so that you will not use it in the feature. All updates after the date will not apply.
You can also try to use the Add/Remove programs and choose IE6 and in the popup window select repair.

Windows ME is compatible with IE6 according to the Windows update page. However, I had the same problem you did. Restore back to 5.5 sp 2, delete the setup file that you downloaded from MS for IE6, and then download setup files again for IE6. I have just recently gone through this frustration also.

There may have been a corrupt setup file out there.

Hope this helps.
