Windows Mobile Device Center doesn’t fully install

I have a new (to me) refurbished Dell Inspiron D531 S. It has an AMD 64 Athlon x2 processor and is running Vista Home Premium 32-bit with 3 GB of memory. I’m trying to get my Dell Axim X5 to sync with Outlook 2003. I attempted to download and install Windows Mobile Device Center several times, but it gets to probably 99.99% hangs for a few seconds and uninstalls itself as though I clicked on a cancel button or something. Part of the program is left behind because I can find the Sync Center in accessories and control panel, but I don’t seem to be able to set up a partnership. The computer recognizes the device as I can see it in Device Manager. I can click on Computer and find the device. Rhapsody certainly finds it.

The Axim is running Microsoft Pocket PC Version 3.0.11171 (Build 11178) (Pocket PC 2003).

The only “help” Microsoft has to offer is the device must not be compatible. I have a hard time believing it’s not compatible because Pocket PC 2003 is listed as compatible and the fact that it looks like the program is uninstalling when it gets close to being done.

I’ve tried looking in Control Panel, Programs & Features to uninstall WMDC, but it’s not listed. I disabled the Windows Firewall. I opened ports in the firewall. I added them myself because the WMDC installation added some things, but not to the firewall. I plugged, unplugged, restarted, turned off, turned on, and I can’t remember what else. I saw at the Microsoft site that some other members had trouble also with different Pocket PCs or SmartPhones, but I didn’t see any solutions. So, I’m trying here.

Is there anything else to try to get this thing working?
