Windows Movie Maker problem under XP Pro SP3

by wiensam . Updated 18 years ago

Windows Movie Maker 2.1 will not open. When I start it it wants to look for a project that does not exist anymore. When I open it I get the following window:

“Windows Movie Maker has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.”

Underneath that is a link for more information which leads to the following info:

“Error signature: AppName: moviemk.exe AppVer: 2.1.4026.0 ModName: qedit.dll
ModVer: 6.5.2600.5512 Offset: 0001b2f1”

That then gives a link which leads to: a whole load of detailed info that means nothing to me but says it is stored in a file called “77dc_appcompat.txt”. However, that file is not to be found anywhere on my computer system.

There appears to be nowehere to download a new copy of Windows Movie Maker 2.1 and no whay to uninstall the old version. I have tried copying the files onto an external drive (so that I have a backup) and then deleting them all on my Windows system but no sooner do I do that than Windows simply rebuilds them, like magic. Copying the files in the Movie Maker folder from a separate XP Pro SP3 machine over the top of them does not seem to make any difference.

I really don’t want to have to uninstall SP3 and IE7 (which doesn’t seem to be uninstallable in any case) and roll back to a reinstall of SP2 to get this to work again.

Any ideas?
