There seems to be a common misconception among users, that a UPS is a cure all for power cuts. Strictly speaking it is – but only if you use it to PREVENT a sudden and drastic denial of power to a running computer system.

The main purpose of the UPS is to maintain power to the system when the AC Mains power suddenly disappears, thereby preventing the hard drive heads from crashing into the platters and the system stopping abruptly while critical system files are still open.

In the first respect, your UPS served its purpose admirably – but at that point you should have started the shutdown process, maintianing the integrity of your system files.

      You didn’t !!

So what you’ve now got is a computer that was abruptly denied power and all of the above (avoidable) problems have now come to pass. The drive heads may well have crashed into the surface of the spinning platters and several critical system files are now lost forever because the system shutdown while these files were still active.

You should try booting from your XP install disc and perform a Repair Install at the very least. If that doesn’t work you can always start from scratch with a fresh install.

Next time there is a power cut, shutdown while on UPS power – that’s what it is for.
