Windows NT/2000 Printer Problem

By TheWrightMan ·
I have a Windows 2000 Professional box that has an Epson printer directly connected to it and is shared. When I try to add the printer on a Windows NT box, I get this error:

Printer driver setup error: The printer driver is unknown

I am an administrator on both machines, so no permission problems. I have the latest drivers and I am pointing to them during printer setup. What is going on?

There is a different driver for NT on the Windows 2k CD
To add drivers for down level clients, open the printer's Properties dialog box and move to the Sharing tab.
Click additional drivers to open additional drivers dialog box.Select the driveers you want to install, click OK,and follow the prompts
The drivers should be installed on the computer to which the computer is connected
Windows NT checks the local printer against the print server when connecting to the network
You may have to use the have Disk option.

Epson some models has a separate software for sharing printers. You have to install and configure the software on both system.

Are you trying to install in the printers folder and opening "Add Printer". If so, you can try adding a printer this way.
Open "Network Neighborhood" and locate the printer attached to the Win2K machine. If you can't see it here then it wasn't shared. If you can see it right click on it and select "Install.." (Win2K will say Connect..) and follow the instructions. Make sure you have the NT drivers and not the 2000 drivers.

I hope that helps.
