Windows nt 4.0 server

By kashmeir63 ·
Hi,

Is there a way to set the server on a timer. To have the server shut down at a certain time and restart at another time on its own?

Example: I would like the server to shut down at 12:01am and boot backup at 11:00am.

Any help would be appreciated.

Well, the shutdown is easy. There are many tools that will shutdown a NT machine. One of my favorites is PSSHUTDOWN.EXE from www.sysinternals.com (part of their PSTools kit that is a free download). YOu just set up an AT scheduled job and run psshutdown at the time you want.

Now, the starting back up is not that easy. If the server is powered off, then the OS will not be running in order to give itself a command to start back up! Also, you can't send a power on command from another server tothis one, again because the machine is off! So, unless someone else has a good idea on turning a machine back on while the machine is off (without requiring someone walking to the server and pressing the power on button) I just can't help you with this part.

Have a look inside the BIOS. Maybe there is an option to "wake up" the machine at a specified time.
