Windows NT 4.0

By alex ·
WHEN TRYING TO ENABLE RAS ON MY WINDOWS NT 4.0 OPERATING SERVICE I AMD ENCOU NTERING THE FOLLOWING PROBLEM: THEIR USED TO BE A INTERNAL MODEM LINKED TO THE COM 1 PORT. THE MODEM FOR SOME UNKNOWN REASON STOPPED WORKING NO DIAL OUT/RECEIVE CALLS. I THEN CONNECTED AN EXTRENAL MODEM(DUXBURY) TO THE EXTERNAL SERIAL PORT. THE RPOGRAM DOES NOT SEE THIS PORT.UNDER THE RAS SECTION ADD/INSTALL MODEM COM 1 STILL SHOWS THAT THE OLD INTERNAL MODEM IS LINKED TO IT. WHEN I REMOVE IT THE SYSTEM SAYS THAT THEIR ARE NO OTHER RAS DEVICES TO ADD.
HOW DO I GET THE OLD MODEM DISCONECTED FORM THE COM PORT. I HAVE UNDER CONTROL PANEL/MODEMS REMOVED THE INTERNAL MODEM FROM THE SYSTEM. AFTER EVERY CHANGE I RESTART THE COMPUTER TO NO AVAIL THE OLD INFO STAYS AND I THINK THIS PREVENTS ME FROM BEING ABLE TO ADD A NEW MODEM. THE COMPUTER IS ALSO AUTOMATICALLY ADDING A COM3 FOR SOME REASON? THIS MOMENT IN TIME I CANNOT UPGRADE TO A MORE RECENT SYSTEM(XP PRO)

THANKS

ALEX

re COM1/COM3

by ThumbsUp2 In reply to Windows NT 4.0

The external modem is not capable of setting itself to COM1, since that port is still active on the motherboard. It is normal for external modems to set themselves as COM3. However, it is probably using the same IRQ as COM1, so you may have to disable COM1 in the device manager to allow your old RAS program to see which device is assigned to the IRQ.

If the older program can't utilize COM3, you'll need to replace the internal modem.

Also, when posting on the internet, use of ALL CAPS is considered to be shouting and becomes very difficult to read. Please turn off the CAPS LOCK if you wish to have anyone help you.
