Windows NT and Windows XP

By cy.tusanda ·
In my office, we had 2 (two) Windows NT 4.0 server. Both are PDC and configured with a trust relationship.

One of our user had a new OS, Windows XP Professional.

The 2 (two) NT server has domain names:
#1: Jakarta
#2: Domain (funny name for a server huh?)

In "Jakarta" we had setup a workgroup called "Windows98", all the workstations are connected to this workgroup. Except the workstation which has a Windows XP.

It can browse to both servers, share the servers hard drives, but cannot connect to other workstations in "Windows98" workgroup.

If I change the Win XP setting so it will join the "Windows98" workgroup, it can't. But when I set to join "Jakarta" domain it was able to join the domain, and can logon to "Domain"domain.

Can anybody help?

Thanks,

Yama

Hi,

By "connect to workstations" I assume you mean share their drives?

Can the Win98 machines share each other's drives?

I'm wondering whether they have file and print sharing enabled on them? Or at least to the ones you're try to connect to...

Cheers,
Tim.

Yes, share their devices.

Yes, all workstations in the "Windows98" workgroup can share files & printers.

Yes, the file & print sharing is enabled.

Thanks,

When you try to have the XP box join the Win 98 "workgroup" called "Windows98", what happens? Do you get any error messages or dialogues popping up? This should not be a problem at all, since the XP box does not haved to authenticate against a server/DC to join a "workgroup".

Thanks for mentioned about this. And in fact, I didn't get any error, just blank. I mean when I browsed to the network neighborhood and opened the "Windows98" workgroup, I didn't saw any computer icons.

You can try using the XP network wizard. Right click on my computer then click the network button and run the wizard at the bottom. Don't have my XP machine with me right now so I can't remember the exact path. sorry

However, just browsing to the workgroup is not the same thing as JOIN-ing that workgroup. Have you tried to join the workgroup, which you do in the network control panel. Instead of specifying a domain, you enter yopur workgroup name.

Although I had enter the workgroup name (joining it) the problem is the same, I cannot see others computers, plus if I did this, I could not login to the JAKARTA domain.

Hi,

I found I had the same problem but the following procedure will fix it...

This was taken from the following forum :

Yes, once I installed XP pro I thought how cool, but to my surprise I found that my XP pro could not see any of the other clients.
However, all my other clients could see my XP.
What Iuse and don't use.
Microsoft XP does not support NetBeui anymore and yes that is ok to do file and print sharing. Instead of NetBeui you can use the Microsoft IPX protocol to share files and printers. (I learned this a long time ago with the game Heretic it could be played by IPX.) Yes, all Clients need to be changed to IPX instead of NetBeui. However my XP pro could still not see the other clients until on each client I right clicked on the IPX protcol went to properties and and checked the I want to enable Netbios over IPX/SPX. This will add a new protocol to your clients called Netbios support for IPX/SPX. As for the XP Pro you will need to have the two protcols added
1. NWLINK Bios
2. NWLINK IPX/SPX/NETBIOS COMPATIBLE.
For security this is great. Because it needs to be bound to Microsoft Client where the TCPIP does not get bound to the Microsoft Clients. Helping prevent security issues.
Once I enabled the Netbios over IPX/SPX on every client connected to the workgroup myXP Pro computer could see all clients.
I hope this helps.
If anyone uses or wants help with the following information I would be glad to help or just hear how your xp experiences go.
Best of Luck!!!!!!!
