Windows Nt boot problems

By mabongm ·
A Server running Windows NT I worked on recently failed to restart. It complains about ntosknl.exe missing or corrupt, which to me means that the boot files are corrupt/missing. How do i come out of this?

ERD :)

by DukeBytes In reply to Windows Nt boot problems

This would be pretty easy to recover from if you have an ERD (Emergency repair disk).

If you do have an ERD - get the install disks and the install CD for NT and start the install process on the server. When it comes to asking if you would like to install NT or Repair NT - select repair and follow the screens and put the ERD in when it asks for it. Don't repair the registry or anything like that - just files.

If you don't have an ERD - you can try the same thing without the ERD and justrepair the files - again NOT the registry or anything else. It MIGHT come back for ya....

One quick fix if you don't have an ERD is if you have another server - BASICALLY - the same - got to it and make an ERD and use it in the 1st box to repairit. This might work out as well.

Good luck,
Duke

DukeBytes is right..

Duke Bytes is right. This is a job for *super hero intro music here*...DAH DUN DAHHHH.....*booming voice* E R D man!

But seriously, you should always make and keep updated ERDs for situations just like this.

Of course, sometimes you can get around this issue by booting with the Last Known Good option.

But Last Known Good won't work if the system was modified, changed , etc....
