Windows NT won’t update

Win NT workstation with latest updates. I installed Office 2000, replacing Office 97. Did all the Office updates. Now when I try to update Windows, I get a screen telling me I have an older version of IE5 and need to install a newer version. (I havethe latest IE6 installed). When I click on the install button, it tells me I have a newer version, so it can’t install the one requested. The immediate question is how can I get Windows NT to update; the other is why does the update program think I have such an old version of IE?
