Windows NT won't update

By jejsub ·
Win NT workstation with latest updates. I installed Office 2000, replacing Office 97. Did all the Office updates. Now when I try to update Windows, I get a screen telling me I have an older version of IE5 and need to install a newer version. (I havethe latest IE6 installed). When I click on the install button, it tells me I have a newer version, so it can't install the one requested. The immediate question is how can I get Windows NT to update; the other is why does the update program think I have such an old version of IE?

Uninstall your IE6.

Whenever you install a MS product (in your case Office 2000), IE is looked at and potentailly "upgraded" (sometimes downgraded as far as the installation if you allow everything to install). When you installed Office 2000, did you do a "custom" install or the "standard?" If you did the "standard," then the registry probably thinks you are using IE5, since IE6 was not available in 2000.

To fix, remove your IE6 installation and reboot, then reinstall using the updatesite.

I did reinstall IE6. Same result.
If I had done a custom install, what should I have left out to avoid the problem?

please, what is your exact error message?
sounds like you need to remove your windows update catalog stuff, basicially clear out and 'reinstall' windows updates, can't find exactly how at the moment but it is posted at the windowsupdate.microsoft.com site under troubleshooting your windows updates...
meanwhile, some easy things to try:
1) IE6 repair (yes, i know you reinstalled it)
ControlPanel/Add Remove/IE6/Repair
2) you say latest updates, you have latest service pack, yes?

Whenever I go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com, the message stating that I have an older version of Internet Explorer 5 than I need comes up. There's no choice of anything to do at that point except to install the newer IE5, but that results in the message that the version I have is newer than the one that is trying to install. Dead end!
I will try your other suggestions. Thanks.

sigh. i am asking for your exact error message for a reason. one thing you can try is to go to support.microsoft.com and search for the exact error phrase you are getting...just saying 'tells me i have older version and wants new' is not what we need to help you. sorry. good luck.

uninstall all IE's and do a regedit to remove traces. I do believe you now have a conflageration in your registry. ALSO, for sgtshultz and others put up the exact error msg you are seeing with all conotations.

I uninstalled IE6 and reinstalled it and it seemed to work. Thanks.
Now I can't figure out to change the answers to acceptable and award points.
