windows protection error on w98 startup

By ksneed ·
When booting a win95 machine I get a "Windows Protection Error"
Press any key to continue.
After pressing a key it shuts down.
It will boot in safe mode.
I did install win98 over the top of 95 but have the same problem.
If all else fails I willreformat and reinstall win98 but its a friends pc and he has nothing backed up.
Thanks for any help.

Is there more to the error such IO SYS. Try remming out smartdrive when in safe mode in the sysedit. This usually fixes the trouble.

The solution to this is most likely a driver for a 3com 10/100 card. It is an el90x.dll and downloaded in a wpfix.exe zip file. If you are using one of these network cards this is the file you need. If you go into safe and remove TCP/IP and it boots, It is the Network drivers.

You can download it from 3com or Dell. Dell uses an embedded 3com NIC. If that is not is it, in the safe mode use generic video drivers, then remove all network cards and load new drivers for each device when you stat adding them back in.

Did you install new software? Look for a file called rmm.pdr. it's in a subfolder of windows and rename or delete this file if its there. Just another possible cause to this problem

Try booting into safe mode, and then removing the video card in device manager. See if it will boot up in Normal mode. Use the latest video card drivers when re-installing. Hope it helps!

You don't say if any changes were made to the system before the problem began. If any were made then try to undo them. If it was a need card or device then take it out or put it back.

All of the above answers are also possible culprits. But check these too:

Do you have a device (scanner, etc.) which you have unplugged from the computer. Certain scanners and other devices scan at start up to set themselves up. And because not all programmers actually know what they are doing, if the device isn't present the computer hangs.

Try to remove the last program installed before the problem started.

Check for viruses and trojans that may be trying to start up at that moment.

One by one remove the software for devices and cards. (related to the suggestion about the 3Com card.) I would start with any that was added just before the problem started.

Good luck,
