Windows Registry Problem - Laplink Installation

By bpath ·
I have had an ongoing problem since LapLink to install programs and files from a W98SE machine to my XPHome machine. The error message described below always appears on boot-up. There appears to be no problems with the OS functioning.

Error Message on Start-Up:

"Windows encountered an error accessing the System Registry. Windows will restart and repair the registry for you."

When I press 'OK' I receive the following message:

"Registry Checker encountered a problem and needs to close." If you check 'Debu' the notification screen goes away.

I have tried to clean the Registry with both Norton Utilites and Registry Mechanic 4.0. Each program will find a few corrections but nothing clears up this start up screen.

Any suggestions?

Corrupted Registry

by BFilmFan In reply to Windows Registry Problem ...

It's been years since I used LapLink to move files between systems, but the most likely cause of the issue is that the registries of Win98 and Windows XP are not the same.

For a more thorough and detailed technical explanation for recovery, ask in this forum:

This is a tech. problem, in search of a solution.

It properly belongs in "Technical Q&A," not in "Discussions." There you will be more likely to get the attention of those seeking questions that they might answer.

You should re-post there..

Thank you..

Registry Repair

Try going into safe mode and running a registry repair application. I've used this one and it worked great:
