Windows Reinstallation Error

By gilliannetran ·

I was wiping my Dell - Inspiron Intel Core i3 Laptop but at 99%, it shut off. Currently when trying to start it up, there is an error message, "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click "OK" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation."

I have clicked "OK" over the past hour, but the message reappears. It does not restart the reinstallation.

What do I do to start up the laptop? Thank you.

Error message on Windows Installation Screen

by Steve Delgato In reply to Windows Reinstallation Er ...

Hi,

You can follow below steps which worked for me.

1) On the same error screen press SHIFT+F10 and it will open up a command prompt window.

2) In the CMD window type the word ‘regedit’, that will open the registry editor.

In the Registry Editor> Browse to>

HKeyLocal machine/SYSTEM/SETUP/STATUS/ChildCompletion, and after highliting childcompletion, on the right hand side check for setup.exe.
if the value is 1 change it to 3 (double click on setup.exe in order to change values).

Then close the registry editor and close the CMD window.

Then click on OK and the computer will restart which will complete the installation.

Let me know if it works.

Regards,
Steve Delgato
