I am the intern administrator for a small network (20 PCs, 20 users) at a small business. I recently moved over our original Windows XP shared folder that kept the majority of our shared files to our server which uses Windows Small Business Server 2003 Standard Edition and is updated with all major updates. I did this because its more secure, you can set up better permissions, and it allows shadow volumes.
For approximately 2 weeks the server based share seemed to work fine. However one day I wasn’t in, in early December (I primarily work only Fridays since it is the only day I have off from college) two users began to have issues saving files to the share. When they try to save files to the share it states “Cannot copy XXX: There is not enough free disk space. Delete one or more files to free disk space, and then try again.” where XXX is the name of the file. Upon right clicking and checking the shared drive it states that their is only one gig total and it varies between 2 and 5 mb of free space. However on everyone else’s account it states that there is over 80 gigs of free space which is what there is supposed to be.
I have logged in under my account on their computers and am able to transfer files fine and it correctly states that there is 80 gigs free. However if those users log into other computers they still only see 1 gig total for the shared drive and a few mb free.
I’ve checked the share permissions and they have they have the same basic permissions as everyone else and as a test I also added those two individual users as having full permissions just as a test and it did not rectify the issue.
The issue might have started around December 11th, I’m not sure. If that is the case I’m not sure if it is caused by the major Microsoft patches released that day.
I don’t know if this is a basic or complicated problem, I’ve had no formal training in Windows Server administration and I’m the only IT employee in the business so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Michael
