Windows server vs novell 5

By nljones ·
I am in the process of heading up a group to determine whether we should switch our existing novell 5 environment to Windows 2000 servers. We currently run all of our apps and administrative users on Novell and our web, email, etc. type applications on NT boxes. I am not partial to either but am looking for any feedback from people who have used both and are unbiased.

Windows server vs novell 5

I have not worked with Novell 5, but I am a CNA v.411 and an MCSE NT4.0. I used to be a diehard Novell person until I got into NT and I discovered that NT works more seamlessly with applications and other services than Novell did. I find that MS has more packages for services such as IIS, Proxy, Exchange, DHCP, DNS, and the list goes on. Not that Novell doesn't offer them, but I have found it easier to work with in MS than Novell. Once again, this is with v.411, I'm not familiar with the 5.0 versions with the ZEN works package, but you also want to consider prices too.

If your running Novell 5 with a lot of services, it would be a big hassel to switch to w2k at this time. Besides w2k's active directory is a run down version of NDS. You will lose a lot of flexibility and security if you move to w2k. You do get popular apps like proxy, exchange, and etc. with w2k. However, Netware 5 and 5.1 are suppling the same type of (less popular) apps with greater security: NDS!

techproguild has a white papers comparing MS active directory with novells NDS, something which would affect security and manageability if your used to NDS and if THAT'S an issue.

good luck,
jonathan

I've been integrating Netware since version 2.10 and NT since it's inception, both have there pro's and con's, what I would base my decision on is the products themselves. Ie: I've been frowning upon novell as a company for the last 2 years, ever since I got my hands on some 5.XX models. They are starting to get sloppy in my opinon, trying to get product to market faster at OUR expense, Christ there first 5.1 service pack is 278MB now that's a doozie!!!!, Not that microsoft is any better, but I always admired that a netware server was up for 494 day's before shutting it down for hardware upgrades, Now you need to mix/comple your own ddi/Scsi drivers to coexist with an adaptec 2940U2W controller??? Anyhow that's what gives...
Good Skill
