Windows Shutdown

By stuart.cairns ·
Has anybody experienced Windows shutting down and restarting of its own accord? I am mainly interested if this has happened to anyone while printing pages off the Internet. Is this a virus?

As far as "crashing" and rebooting, depends upon what version of Windows your running. For the most part, when there is a system failure on Windows 2000/XP, the system will do a memory dump and reboot itself. you can disable the rebooting feature by opening the system properties page, choosing startup and recovery, then uncheck the box automatically reboot.

Determining the cause is another matter. Normally with Windows XP, you'll be prompted to send an error report after such an event. You'll be directed to a MS support page outlining the event and possible causes. Other than that, could be any number of issues that unless a tech looks at the thing, be hard to give an answer as to why it happened.
