windows shuts down as if by magic

By smogmonster ·
With event log 1074, user: NT authority\system reason: legacy API.
Any ideas why this should happen?

Sounds like MSBLASTER.
Are you 100% sure the system is fully patched?

yeah, all av patches up to date. Just one thing though, this happened after Dell support came in to do a hardware change. left the guy to do it and came back to this.

Blaster would have been my first guess too but as you are patched and there was some 'fixing' going on its almost certainly an incorrect driver for something. Try reinstalling sound / graphics / chipset drivers to the latest versions from the web. If that doesnt work try the old versions that came with the hardware.
