Windows Slow in Shuting Down

When i go to shut down Windows XP, it tells me that Windows is shutting down. It them seems to "hang" for a long while before it shuts down.

How can i cure this

It sounds like your profile may be holding locks on the registry. I had this issue where it would take several minutes to shutdown my machine. This fix from Microsoft solved the issue. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=1B286E6D-8**2-4E18-B570-42470E2F3582&displaylang=en

Or it could be a service that does not want to unload. What error messages are in the event logs in Computer Management/Event viewer/System?

Check how many services you have running. If there are too many (more than 30) try killing unnecessary services before shutting down.

Once you identify the services slowing you down, you can go into MSCONFIG through the Start-->Run and uncheck programs from the Startup tab that you don't need running when you boot up.
