windows starts only in safe mode

By livesfreely ·
i recently installed directx 9.0a on my pc with windows 98 SE. After the installation, i can only start the windows in safe mode. If i start it in the normal mode, it freezes and someitmes i can't even see the START button. I tried restoring the registry, it didn't work either. Instead, when i checked the restored registry file in the registry restorer, it said NEver started along with the time i tried to start it. Could anyone suggest a solution for this?

Thanks

It sounds like you have a graphics card issue.

1) Ensure your card is DX9 compatible by visiting the manufacturers site, they may even have a DX9 driver update. Install the latest set of drivers.

2) When in SAFE MODE, click START>RUN and typeDXDIAG into the command line.

3) This is the Direct X diagnostic tool, run through the various tests to see if DX finds the error or warns of incompatibility.

NOTE: The Chas will probably be along shortly with a more definitive solution but it's worth chescking for updates in the meantime.

Oz is correct.

If the driver for your video card does not support DirectX 9, your PC may become VERY unstable.

From safe mode, in Display Properties, switch to a standard VGA controller with 16 color 640 * 480 resolution.

I recommend that you update both the chip-set drivers for the motherboard and your video card driver.

If there is not a DirectX 9 compatible driver for your video card, I recommend going back to DirectX 7 or 8.

There is a utility to remove DirectX 7 and 8.

I don't know if it works for DirectX 9.

Hi and I add the above are both correct AND some of the 9X downloads are for XP and will screw up a 98, 98se, or ME OS to the point you will have to save and backup everything and do a full format and start over.
Ie 6 enhanced for XP or anything enhanced for XP will cause problems with any other OS.
Sorry and take it up with M$ as they wrote it that way.

It is my direct experience that there hasn't been any DirectX 9.0 update problems on any Windows OS that I have done that wasn't remedied by updating the video card driver w/ 1 that was written specifically for use w/ DirectX 9.0 yet. It will solve all kinds of problems from the 1 you are experiencing to restart & shutdown hangs. I have no understanding why MS doesn't list that on the update site as a definite pre-requisite "before" downloading or updating to DirectX 9.0. But I do agree w/ the system board driver update also.

Thanks to all of u for responding.
I did use the dxdiag.exe. Under the network tab I have two files missing-- dpnwsock.dll & dpnmodem.dll. Also, it shows that i have directx8.1 installed currently. For everything else it shows no problems.

I wasable to log into normal mode in win98 by reducing the harware acceleration to minimum. The screen that appears is fuzzy. It did work for one time, but I don't know if it'll work again though.

Sounds like you're almost there.
Id DXDIAG is reporting version 8.1, your DX9 was a bad install.
Try reinstallnig it again, but make sure you have compatible video card drivers first. A fresh copy should replace the skipped or missing files.

I formatted my hard drive and reinstalled win98se. I could start the computer 2 or 3 times before it started freezing while in the process of loading desktop. Even ctrl+Alt+Del won't work. I've formatted 3 times by now. The problem still persists. Can anybody suggest why?

Reinstall your sound and video drivers. Also, you could do with reinstalling the operating system.
don't format, just go to the cab files and reinstall it. It is most likely that some dlls are missing or corrupted. Also, you can try reinstalling direct X 9. I am running it on windows 98se, o/b sound and vidio, no problems.

Finding a compatible DX9.0 Video Driver for your graphics card seems to be the key, if not I suggest you update the graphics card to one that you can find a DX 9.0 compatible driver for. I also had restart problems until I did (no shutdown problems though). After the update everything is very smooth.

Good Luck.
