windows station is down

By technoooo ·
I have been asked to trouble shoot an XP machine with an error message saying, (windows station is down.) The mach. is in a non-server environment. I have not seen this before, any ideas. Thanks

If you cold boot the system, do you get an error message. I've never seen an error with that message.

if it happens at the boot up I would check msconfig and see if anything out of the ordinary is there that is trying to start...

If the machine comes up have you checked the event log to see if it gives any error there.

i bet is says 'workstation is locked'.
see if user can type ctl-alt-del to get to login screen. if they can't remember their username and password try administrator with a blank password. if that works, go into control panel/users and find the users account. give them local administrator account membership and reset their password for them.
