Windows Stop Error 0x0000007b

by loxias44 . Updated 19 years ago

I have a bit of a conundrum that I need some help with. I recently upgraded a number of components (mobo, cpu, memory, vid card). After trying to boot my system up, I get stop error 0x0000007b.

Here’s the tricky part. I have two hard drives and a DVD drive. Windows xp is installed on HD1, while Linux is installed on HD2. GRUB is installed as the boot manager on HD1. My new mobo only has one IDE channel, and I have 3 IDE devices. If I only plug in HD1 and the DVD drive, I get a GRUB error because it can’t see the linux partition. If I plug just HD2, there is no MBR to load an OS from. I have a PCI/IDE controller, but until I get into windows, I can’t install it.

I’m wondering how I might fix the MBR on HD1 (or completely rewrite it–that’s fine too) without being able to access any part of the drive.

Any ideas?
