Windows swap file is damaged

I got an error message that my swap file is damaged. Possibly that is the cause of my system working like chilled molasses. What can I do instead of restore? Specifics: Windows ME, Pentium III (700Mhz), 512 Meg RAM, 20Gig Hard drive, Internet Explorer 6.Ohhhh why did I fall for this update of IE!!!!
