Windows Taskbar Autohide

By M.R. ·
We have a 98 pc with Office loaded (tried both 2k and xp version). The user likes to use Autohide on the Taskbar but often finds that with Excel open he can't get the Taskbar to re-appear without minimizing Excel. I've seen other forum users with this problem but no answers. Anyone? Thanks.

Sounds like a common memory /processor issue.
Excel uses a lot of macros and formulas and is quite resource intensive.
Is it possible that the users PC just can't refresh and keep up?
I have seen this specific problem, coupled with a few other related problems and have resolved everything by adding RAM.

It's not the newest but memory isn't an issue and it only started happening recently. Could be almost any MS patch or AV update I suppose. User isn't complaining of any hessitation or other problems though.

Try running a program such as Adaware. The user may have picked up some spyware junk that runs in the background. this will also cause a PC that seemed to have enough memory to run some applications slower. The big question is HOW MUCH RAM is installed?? I have had many customers tell me they had plenty of RAM and NO spyware only to find out that they had 128 MB and 30 spy programs running. The 128 MB gets eaten up pretty quick. Again this may be isolated to Excel because of the additional resources that Excel uses.

Thanks for trying. He has been scanned by multiple scanners - still possible though, he isn't the safest user.

It will happen in Win98 if Excel is maximized on the screen. If it is stretched to "almost" full screen, the auto-hide will work. Users may not want to do this. I suggest making sure that they have a keyboard with the "windows" key on it and you instruct them to hit this key to make their taskbar reappear. This is the simplest solution.

Seen this, he can do this but I'm looking for an MS fix not a work-around. Thanks.

try setting the taskbar to "auto hide" and "always on top". This seems to work on 98 with excel. The auto hide feature still functions, but always on top will allow it to appear when in excel.

It is. This is the only PC with this problem. The only thing that has changed is MS patches. Thanks.
