Windows - Temporary folder

By Kulwants ·
How do I restrict size of Temp folder (both in 95 & NT) to certain size, say ~ 4 MB. Some of the Laptops, which we use have 2GB hard drive. Temp folders use lot of space, as users don't delete temp. files on a regular basis. Any suggestions on cleaning it automatically.

Get to Internet Options (either from Tools in Browser or from Control Panel). Then under General Tab, go to Temporary Internet Files and Click Settings. You can set the amount of disk space to use there.

Your answer relates to Temp. Internet files. My question relates to Temp foilder, in C Drive creeated in Windows program. Whenever you open any word/Excel or other document, windows creates a copy in temp folder. Many a times this temp file does notget deleted. Therefore over a period of time, it gets large ( I have seen it grows easily to 150 - 200 MB).

Put the following batch file in the startup group, or add the following code to the users' login script:

DELTEMP.BAT

DEL C:\TEMP\*.TMP
DEL C:\Windows\TEMPORA~1\*.TMP
DEL C:\Windows\TEMPORA~1\*.GIF
DEL C:\Windows\TEMPORA~1\*.JPG
DEL C:\Windows\TEMPORA~1\*.HTM
DEL C:\Windows\TEMPORA~1\*.HTML
:END

Hope this helps.

You could include a line in autoexec.bat or autoexec.nt like this:

echo Y | del C:\temp\*.*

This will delete all files at bootup.

I didn't find autoexec.nt file in any of NT workstations here.

It's very easy to clean the temp folder automatically. In Windows Explorer, choose Scheduled Tasks, and then Add Scheduled Task. The wizard will begin. You will want to choose Disk Cleanup as the application to run, then choose the best time to perform the task (shut down is best, or if the laptops are left on during lunch, I would suggest then). It is very important that you check the box "Open advanced properties for this task" which appears on the "You have successfully completed creation" window. That option will allow you to choose the specific folders to clean out (temp, deleted items, temp internet files, etc).

Unable to find scheduled task in the windows explorer either in the menu item or in any of the tabs. Tried to look for it in the help menu; could not fimd it.
