    Windows update

    Locked

    by ejames ·

When I first installed XP pro I was able to go to Windows update site and download updates. For some reason when I do this now I receive the message “Administrators Only”. I have had the company out who services our computers and they cannot solve the problem. Also emailed Microsoft Teck support and they gave me a number or things to try but nine worked. Has anyone else had this problem? How did you resolve it?

you don’t mention exact error message, what service pack xp is on, what you have tried…
2cents: check system time. make sure is accurate year and date.

The message appers on the update web page that I do not have administrative privilages. We have change all the administrators with no results. Also on the suggestion from microsoft we have gone into the regestry and made the changes their that they suggested but that did not work. we refeshed Windows at their suggestion.

log on with an account that has administrative permissions. If you have been, then log on with the local administrator account itself. There are 2 registry options that will disallow windowsupdate, make sure that they are not enabled. If that doesnt work then try looking at the local group policy (MMC snap in). If not the SAM file may be corrupt, rename it and then reboot. Log in as administrator with no password after that.

Thanks for your reply I have tried to log on with all the options you suggested. What are the two regestry keys you are refering to and how do I correct them. I may have already do this as one of the soultions suggested by Microsoft. I found an amipro.sam in Documents and settings\administrator\templates, documents and settings\administrator.ALL SAINTS\templates, and documents and settings\default user\templates. Are these the ones you are refering to?

I have done suggested changes to registry and followed all instructions in MKB article 316524.
You reffered to SAM. I found a number of SAM. SAM.SD and SAM.SP in windows/1386,SAM and SAM.log in windows/repair and also in system32/config.
Which one do I rename and what name
