Windows Update Fails w/IE6.0

By pierrejamme ·
Since update to IExplore.exe 6.0 I can no lmnger use the Windows Update option. During scan for new files (Most common) or trying to update files (Occassionally) IExplre errors out and wants to send a report. Of course Microsoft never responds to thes reports, even after sending over twenty of them. I just re-installed IE6.0 and am still getting these erroors. The details is very long The summary is as follows: AppName iexplore.exe AppVer 6.0.2800.1106 ModName winspool.drv ModVer 4.10.1998 Offset 00001603.

If IE6.0 already made a dent in your computer, then reinstalling IE6.0 won't do any good. The damage to your files is permanent. Microsoft will not bother to fix this. So I say clean install your OS and never go back to IE6.0

Windows Update Fails w/IE6.0

Take a look at one of these ...

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;193385

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;231917

Remember to remove any spaces in the URLs.

Or you could always try installing IE6 w/ SP1 if you haven't done so already.

Hope this helps.

Go to Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs and select Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, then select "Add/Remove". On the popup menu select "Restore the previous Windows configuration". This will normally restore your previous version of IE, although it may not work as you've reinstalled IE6 again, but it's worth a try.

If it's greyed out or won't restore the previous version then try "Repair Internet Explorer", found in the same menu.

I tried this and now my version is 6.0.2600.000, I am assuming this only removed the service pack. Thought I would repeat the process, but now it is not showing in Add/Remove programs. I think I have a 5.0 version somewhere, I'll try running setup on that to see what happens. Can't hurt, looking at a clean install if it doesn't work anyway.

There have been numerous issues reported with MS's latest update version. Some things that have worked are:

-check your current version of spoolss.drv and make sure that it really is 4.10.1998. If it is not use sfc and restore it (I'm assuming you're suing Win98SE from the file date).
-remove your installed printers and try the update again.
-if you are using Trend Micro's anti-virus program disable the browser scanning (MS update uses ActiveX and Trend's anti-virus prevents it).

Windows Update Fails w/IE6.0

Dr. Bob: I am using Win98SE but not that file, We all use the ME spoolss.drv due to Spool32 Errors. But I have been using this driver for over a year and only recently have had this problem. As Network Admin I have 14 printers in my Printer directory, quite a chore to delete and re-install.
We use Network Associates Active Virus Defense.

If you have replaced the spoolss.dll with the ME version on Win98 as has been reported to fix various printer problems then there is the issue. this has been reported as a problem with the new MS update.

Since we know what the problem is then trythis:

Copy your current spoolss.dll file to a different directory. Replace your updated (ME) version of spoolss.dll with the original Win98SE version (the easiest way would be to use sfc). Do the update and see if it works and then put your current version back in place.

Once your ME version is back in place then try the update again to see if you can get the update to do a complete scan without erroring out. If it once again errors out then you might have to do this everytime you update.I know it's a pain but what you are doing is not approved by MS and they won't fix it anyway.

Sorry,

DrBob:
