Windows update give unrecord error

By cadman53114 ·
I have completed my monthly check to make sure that all our workstations have latest and greatest windows updates (even with automatic updates on, they do not always get everything). This last one, several machines got a critical update for Windows 2000 "rollup". I have one machine since this update the icon appears in the task bar that updates are ready to download, click on it, nothing happens, 10 minutes later it comes back and the same thing. I went to windows update and now get an error message when trying to run express install (same happens on custom) that I must enable the "userdate persistance" under internet options, custom settings. This was already enabled. Still cannot use windows update. To get the update icon to stop coming up I had to turn the automatic update off. Just means I have to do this machine manually each week. It is my primary work machine so no big deal. It would just be nice to turn the updates back on.

Have you thought of switching to WUS (Windows Update Service)? This way all the updates are "pushed" to all client computers. All the users have to do is shut down there computer every night to install any new updates.

I know this really does not address your problem, but it might make your life easier since you will be able to see which computer need updates from a web interface that gets installed with it.

It is something for you to look in to.
