Windows Update is hanging

By Zet ·
Hello,

I recently upgraded to IE 6.0 from 5.5 SP2. While everything is running smoothly, the Windows Update hangs. The usual window Checking Available Updates... pops up, and stays there forever. The OS is Windows 2000 Pro SP2, but I don't think it is relevant. I remember I had this problem before, and end up re-installing IE. Is there less surgical solution to this problem?

Regards,
Arthur

Windows Update is hanging

well, first of all does the windows updater go to the InternetExplorer site instead of the windows update page? Also you could try the CriticalPackage exe from the eroor page if you get that far, if not this is the long way around your problem:
Add/RemovePrograms, uninstall the 6.0 upgrade;
Windows Explorer find the Windows Update Setup Files Folder, and open the text file"this folder is safe to remove", it should say "This folder contains the information needed to install Internet Explorer 5.5." Then run the ie5setup executable. You shouldn't have to download the whole package again.

Hope this helps ........ H
