Windows Update is hanging

By Zet ·
Hello,

I recently upgraded to IE 6.0 from 5.5 SP2. While everything is running smoothly, the Windows Update hangs. The usual window Checking Available Updates... pops up, and stays there forever. The OS is Windows 2000 Pro SP2, but I don't think it is relevant. I remember I had this problem before, and end up re-installing IE. Is there less surgical solution to this problem?

Regards,
Arthur

Try taking it out of your start menu if it is there or crt alt del and end task... but that is a temp fix. removal from the start menu would keep it from loading. Hope that helps

Thanks for you reply. Well, it is not in my Start Up group, if that's what you mean. Also, this is Windows 2000, not 9x - you don't have to press ctrl-alt-del to kill the program

no guarantees, but this happened to me once before and the answer was either (i can't remember exactly) the microsoft active-x download was disabled or the microsoft java virtual machine settings were disabled/incorrect.
in either case, check with you security settings in your browser (tools => internet options => security).
hope this helps.
