windows update problem

By clerk@work ·
when installing critical updates to internet explorer 6 through windows updates to a win 2000 machine I keep getting a "backup file cannot initialize uninstall will not be available for this update" and it has a continue and a exit button. I have tried to repair ei6 and reinstall but still get the error. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank You

Are you sure you have plenty of available drive space on the root drive (usually C: drive)?? Sounds like there is not enough room for uninstall of the patches.

hope this helps

On an 8Ggb hd there is 3.5Gb free. This only happens on internet explorer updates all other critical updates work fine. The exact message is "The backup file to save uninstall information could not initialize. Do you want to continue? If you choose to continue, you will not be able to uninstall later." and then there is a yes or a no button. Thanks again for your help.
