Windows Update takes over IE Home page

    Locked

    by fadbel ·

Every time I start Internet Explorer, instead of my default Home page, a link to Windows update opens. I’ve made changes in the registry (my IE Home Page hasn’t been changed) but every time, Win Update takes over on an IE startup.
I have Automatic Updates set (and haven’t had this problem in the past) and would prefer it (I’m lazy). However, I want my default Home page when I start IE.
    HELP??

      Try this,

      Open internet explorer
      Click Tools
      Click Internet Options…
      Click the Advanced Tab
Clear the check box next to Automatically Check for Internet Explorer Updates
      Click Ok

      I hope this helps

Sorry, that functions for Internet Explorer updates only. I have Windows Automatic Update link in the Address Bar every time I open Internet Explorer.

I am running SP2 with every update available. That’s one reason I want to dump this. I don’t need any more updates.
I need some more specific info on which key you want me to check. Also, check What for SP4?

Additional info on this. Following is the URL that gets loaded each time I start IE.

      http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

If I remove it from the registry, it comes back when I next open IE.

Try searching the registry for “start page” and have a look if any of the hits have the website you have listed in it. Then change that key to the website you want. Had similar problems with favourites a while back.
      Ciao

Sorry, I’ve already done that and every time after that I open IE, the “start page” gets updated to the “Updates” URL.
I’ve searched for every instance in the registry and removed the URL and replaced it with my default home URL…didn’t help.

It could possibly sound like IE is getting told from a program that it recieves info from when it goes online, so check any spy/anti vir apps you have to see if they automatically change your browser page to this one for ‘security’ reasons. As if you have all the updates installed, also the security updates not just sp2, and you have changed the registry then microsoft should have no intrest in your browser homepage. Also double check that the website that is loaded is the actuall M$ website as their sites are a common choice to duplicate for uploading malicious ware on to your comp. You could also just try re-installing your browser as it keeps a copy of your bookmarks etc. Or trying another browser…….!

It appears that during the multitude of Windows Updates I’ve received (a couple of times 40 + as some mysteriously disappeared), the problem has fixed itself. Sorry.
