Windows Update Won't Work on Win 98SE

By john.kappes ·
I had a hard drive fail and had to reinstall Win 98SE on a white box system. When I launch Windows Update, the IE launches and a dialog box pops up that says "Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page. As a resultthe page may not display correctly." The only option is to hit "OK". The Windows Update screen comes up, but in big bold letters on the right side of the screen, it says "Administrators Only". It continues "To install items from Windows Update, you must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group." This is Win98SE. Even is I log on to my LAN as administrator, I get the same thing.

I reset all of my ActiveX controls to "enable", and as a result I don't get the ActiveX message but I still get the Administrator thing.

Help!!

Windows Update Won't Work on Win 98SE

Hi

The problem you are having is with the older version of IE. The Norton Anti Virus 2K3 disk will have IE 6 on the disk. This is located in the Support\MSIE directory. Run the IE6 setup and it should solve your problem.

I hope this helps

I tried that. I installed IE 6 from the Technet CD, and I still have the same problem.

If you have internet connectivity outside the lan connect to it and update your Win98. If you do not have, talk to the Administrator of the LAN and ask that your computer be removed from the group policy prohibiting updates of the workstation's software. While it may be true that you were logged on as Administrator, the policy could have been set on the computer and not on the user.

Go here and you can download the files. This is the corporate download site.

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp?corporate=true

Remember remove any spaces that show up.

Good Luck Lee

By the way Microsoft has anounced the discontinuation of support for Windows 98.

Patches and updates are going away 98 will not be supported. Severe security patches will be on a case to case basis.

Microsoft has not announced how long the corporate updates will remain on the site.
