Re-install over existing copy

by eujay In reply to Windows version upgrade.

I have re-installed windows on my home PC to fix faults after I messed with it. One time I was running win 95 and when I put the win 98 CD in it recognized a newer version and asked if I wanted to upgrade. If you start the sr2 cd you may find it will detect a newer version and ask you if you want to upgrade.

As a precaution I would first make copies of the existing Autoexec.bat, config.sys and the entire Windows directory. Put them in a temp directory while you mess with it.

If you start the sr2 CD and it does not autodetect then I would go ahead and re-install anyway. My experience was that windows just overwrites existing files so thta what you will get is a new version of windows. I have always found that the icon files are unnafected by this process. When the re-install is complete the shortcuts are all still there.
Hope this helps. Let me know what happens
